The best chocolate dipped strawberries
These chocolate dipped strawberries are so irresistible – they are one of those fancy bite-size desserts that everyone loves. My favorite is the heart-shaped chocolate covered strawberries. They are completely impressive looking. The BEST chocolate dipped strawberries EVER!
What kind of chocolate is the best for chocolate covered strawberries?
The most important part of this recipe is the chocolate! So using high quality chocolate is really important. Baking chocolate works best. Baker’s baking chocolate is my favorite and I always have good results with it. I like semi-sweet, but you can use bittersweet, milk or white chocolate.
Cheap chocolate chips usually do not melt well and don’t taste as good. Baking chips are fine, but note that good white chocolate chips are difficult to find, so it’s best to use baking white chocolate bars.
How to melt chocolate?
You can melt chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler. Using microwave is the easiest way.
Melting chocolate in the microwave:
- Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, and set the microwave at half power.
- Microwave at 30-second intervals, and stir each time in between until the chocolate is smooth.
It usually takes 2-3 minutes depending on the amount of chocolate and the power of your microwave.
Melting the chocolate in a double boiler:
- Fill a saucepan with one or two inches of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Reduce the heat to low, and then place chocolate into a glass bowl that covers the saucepan tightly. The bottom of the bowl shouldn’t touch the water.
- Stir the chocolate constantly until melted.
How to prepare the strawberries?
Rinse the strawberries and pat ry carefully with paper towels. Make sure the strawberries are complete dry as even a little excess water can interfere with dipping. You can leave the green leaves on if you are dipping the whole strawberries, but if you are making heart shaped strawberries, you need to remove the green leaves and stems.
To make heart-shaped strawberries, cut each strawberry in half lengthwise. Then place two haves next to each other to form a heart shape. Fasten with a tooth pick. Pat dry the strawberries once more after cutting.
How to make chocolate dipped strawberries

- Set aside toppings such as sprinkles, decorating gels, and crushed nuts, etc.
- Dip the strawberries or strawberry hearts in the melted chocolate, and coat with your favorite toppings.
- Place the chocolate covered strawberries on the baking sheet.
- Let them rest until the chocolate has set.
Tips for making the best chocolate dipped strawberries
- Make sure to dry the strawberries thoroughly using paper towels. Any water left on the strawberries can cause the chocolate to seize up. It’s best to use room temperature strawberries that are fresh and firm.
- Use high-quality baking chocolate for this recipe. You can add small amount of oil to make the chocolate smoother and shining.
- Make sure to scrape the excess chocolate off the bottom of the strawberries. This will prevent extra chocolate from pooling next to your strawberries on the tray.
- You can use other toppings such as crushed nuts, graham cracker crumbs, oreo crumbs, and coconuts, etc.
How long do chocolate covered strawberries last?
These chocolate covered strawberries taste best the same day they are made, but they can last up to 2 days in the refrigerator. If you plan to serve them the day, you can leave them at room temperature (away from direct sunlight).
