What Is a Milkshake?

As the name suggests, a milkshake is a drink that contains milk and is shaken! These days most milkshakes are made in a blender or some kind of machine that makes easy work of blending milk, ice-cream, and flavorings.

What is a Malt?

Malts, or malted shakes are a type of milkshake. The distinct flavor comes from malted milk powder which is a combination of wheat flour, malted barley, whole milk, and evaporated whole milk powder.

The Differences Between Malt and Shake

Similar to milkshakes, malts are made with milk, ice-cream, and flavorings. The key difference between the two is the malted milk powder added to malt shakes. This one ingredient creates a totally different flavor profile. Malts tend to taste sweeter and a bit savory, are thicker, and have slightly more nutrients thanks to the barley in the malt powder.

Is a Malt Thicker Than a Milkshake?

The consistency of a malt is thicker than a milkshake because of the malted milk powder.

Is a Malt Better Than a Milkshake?

Malts have slightly better nutrients and are easier to digest because of the barley in the malt powder. Whether you’re team milkshake or team malt, it’s important to remember that both drinks contain a lot of sugar, so it’s best to enjoy them in moderation!

How to Make A Milkshake

It’s easy to make a milkshake at home. You’ll need a blender, milk, ice cream, and flavored syrup. Check out the recipe below for instructions.

How to Make Malts

To make a homemade malt, you’ll need ice cream, milk, flavored syrup and malted milk powder. Instead of adding everything to the blender at the same time, let the ice cream, milk, and syrup blend until creamy, and then add the malted milk powder until blended, thick, and creamy.

Summary

Milkshakes and malts are cold and creamy drinks made with milk, ice cream, and flavorings. The key difference between the two is malts also contain malted milk powder. A malt is considered to be a type of milkshake but because milkshakes don’t include malted milk powder, they would never be a malt.
