What is Malted Milk Powder?

Light yellow in colour, malted milk powder is a naturally sweet and nutty flavored powder. It adds a pleasant crunch and a nutty sweetness to candies.

In fact, if you enjoyed Whoppers or Maltesers as a child, you’re probably familiar with its delicious flavor.

History of Malted Milk Powder

You might be surprised to learn that malted milk powder was invented way back in 1873 by the Horlick brothers. Originally intended as a nutritional supplement for infants and invalids, it became a favorite nonperishable food for world explorers.

Fast forward to years later, malted milkshakes became a popular treat at soda shops. Nowadays it is sold in supermarkets and enjoyed with warm milk, hot chocolate, and in baked goods.

Is Malted Milk Powder the Same as Dry Milk?

While both products are powdered, there are many differences. Dry milk, also known as powdered milk, is actually a form of dehydrated milk and does not have a sweet taste. To drink it, you need to add liquid, usually water. Malted milk powder is a combination of wheat flour, malted barley extracts, dry milk, salt, and sodium bicarbonate. It is naturally sweet and has a nutty flavor.

Malted Milk Powder vs Milk Powder

Milk powder, also known as dry milk, is unsweetened milk that has had the liquid removed. To enjoy it as a drink, you would have to add water to it. Malted milk powder is a naturally sweet and nutty flavored powder that can be added to candies, baked goods, milk, and hot chocolate.

What Does Malted Milk Powder Taste Like?

Malted milk powder has a naturally sweet flavor that’s mellow and nutty. It’s best added to other ingredients as it brings a subtle but delicious flavor to milkshakes, smoothies, candies, and baked goods. Some even say that it adds an umami flavor to sweets and desserts.

How to Use Malted Milk Powder

There are many ways to enjoy the taste of malted milk powder. Add it to baked goods such as brownies, cookies, and cupcakes. You can also mix it into hot chocolate or a glass of warm milk. Or how about making your own malted milkshake or adding it to your favorite smoothie?

How Can I Store Malted Milk Powder to Prevent it from Becoming Hard?

Storing malted milk powder in an airtight resealable jar will help to keep it loose and free of lumps. You can also place the container into a sealed ziplock bag. Be sure to keep it in a cool, dry, and dark cupboard because exposure to moisture and sunlight can cause lumps.

Where Can I Buy Malted Milk Powder?

You should be able to find malted milk powder at your local grocery store, in the same aisle as powdered milk.

Malted Milk Powder Substitutes

If your recipe calls for malted milk powder and you don’t have any on hand, you can use regular powdered milk instead. You’ll miss out on the nutty flavor of malted milk and you may have to add a touch more sugar.

My malted milk has become hard, so what is the best way to get it out of the plastic container so I can put it in the blender.
Thank you for any suggestions you can provide.
