Pro Tips

  • Try adding some salt to your pinto beans while they’re cooking. If you wait until the end to add the salt, it can be more difficult to season them.
  • If you feel like some meat is missing in your beans, try adding in some ham hock, a ham bone, ground beef or fatty bacon pieces.
  • Season your beans according to the recipe. Then add more according to your taste.

Different Flavors for Your Pinto Bean Seasoning Mix

  • Salty flavor: Add any of your favorite salts – table, sea, celery or kosher.
  • Sour flavor: Look to use white vinegar, lemon juice or lime juice here.
  • Spicy Flavor: For a bit of a kick, use some chili powder, sriracha sauce, or hot sauce.
  • Umami flavor: This unique flavor is achieved by adding in some soy sauce, anchovy paste, or tomato paste.
  • Smoky flavor: If the smoky flavor is what you crave, then simply add in some bacon, smoked sausages or smoked paprika.

You can also look at trying other seasonings like thyme, rosemary or bay leaves.

How To Season Crockpot Pinto Beans

  1. Soak your beans overnight in water in a crock pot.
  2. The next day, drain the water from the beans. Be sure to discard any beans that don’t look right.
  3. Add 2 inches of fresh water back into the crock pot with the bean, garlic and onion.
  4. Turn the crockpot on low and cook the pinto beans for 8-10 hours or until tender.

I wondered what kind of chili powder, like American chili powder (which has other spices in it), or straight chili powder?

Hi Sheree, It depends on how heavily you wish to season the beans, but I’d suggest a tablespoon plus or minus. Beans need lots of seasoning, in my opinion. Thanks and good luck!
