What is Fried Ice Cream?

Fried ice cream is a delectable dessert made of frozen ice cream that is coated in a batter, and then quickly deep-fried. In the United States, fried ice cream gained its popularity through a chain of Mexican restaurants called Chi-Chi’s.

Fried Ice Cream Without The Deep Fry

This homemade fried ice cream is just like the traditional ones, but without the mess of deep-frying! Instead, you will try a simple frying method and switch up how you prepare your ice cream!  

This Mexican-style Fried Ice Cream is made by taking vanilla ice cream, rolling it in a topping that consists of sauteed butter, cinnamon, and cornflakes and finishing it off with a chocolate or caramel sauce. Can you say, YUM?!!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Corn Flakes Cereal
  • Butter
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ice Cream
  • Your Favorite Toppings

How to Make Fried Ice Cream

  1. Crush cornflakes into a resealable bag.
  2. Add butter to a skillet over medium heat. Once melted, stir in crushed corn flakes and cinnamon.
  3. Cook the mixture for about 2 minutes or until it turns golden brown. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.
  4. Take the ice cream out of the freezer, scoop out the amount that you’d like to use, ideally about 8-10 servings, and shape into balls.
  5. Roll the ice cream balls in the cornflakes mixture and coat evenly, making a thick coating on the outside.
  6. Freeze for about 10 – 15 minutes or keep them in the freezer until you are ready to serve.

Tips and Tricks

  • Instead of vanilla ice cream, try your favorite flavor instead.

Can I Make it Ahead of the Time

Yes, you can make the ice cream balls with the cornflakes coating a few days ahead of time, just be sure to keep them frozen. Wait until serving to add any toppings!

Ingredients

  • 6 cups corn flakes cereal

Instructions

  • Add cornflakes into a resealable bag, using a rolling pin, and crush the cereal into small bits.
  • Add butter to a skillet over medium heat. Once melt, stir in crushed corn flakes and cinnamon. Turn up the heat, slightly.
  • Continue to cook the mixture for about 2 minutes or until it turns golden brown.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.
  • Take the ice cream out of the freezer, scoop out the amount that you’d like to use, ideally about 8-10 servings, and shape into balls.
  • Roll the ice cream balls in the cornflakes mixture and coat evenly, making a thick coating on the outside.
  • Freeze for about 10 – 15 minutes or keep them in the freezer until you are ready to serve.
