How to Choose Pencils

While you’re sketching, it can be difficult to choose the right pencil. If you’re new, it’s recommended to start your drawing with a pencil on the H scale. If you find that the pencil is too light and won’t smudge easily, you can finish off your drawing with a darker line quality, such as a pencil B grade.

How to Sketch Roses (Step-by-Step Instructions)

Sketching is an essential step in the design process, and it doesn’t have to be perfect — because the point of sketching is to get your ideas out quickly. How do you come up with a good sketch idea?

Equipment

  • Hard pencil HB
  • Medium soft pencil 2B or slightly lower
  • Soft pencil 5B or lower
  • Sheet of paper

Instructions

  • To begin, draw a teardrop/egg shape with a hard pencil. Be sure to use light lines – this will be the rose’s inner bud.
  • Draw the “opening” of this shape.
  • Inside the rose, draw little petals
  • Close those petals into a heart shape.
  • Next, connect the bud and the rose flower outline drawing to create a petal shape.
  • Now draw additional heart shapes in your rose sketch, making these ones less regular and more open.
  • Draw one more petal on this level.
  • To draw a bud inside the petals of the rose, first draw small petals then larger ones.
  • The rest of the petals should bend more and face down to make this rose look more realistic.
