While this is partially true, there are only a few species of shrimp that can be enjoyed raw with the most popular choice being Amaebias. Cooking this species will take away their naturally sweet flavor but taste best when served on nigiri or sushi rice.

How to Prepare Raw Shrimp to Eat?

When eating raw shrimp, you’ll want to follow a few simple steps. First, defrost them if your shrimp if it’s frozen. Then you’ll want to take the head off. To do this you will need to grab the body with one hand and using your thumb and pointer finger squeeze the head gently. The goal here isn’t to squish the head, but to be able to twist the body of the shrimp enough to remove the head. From there, remove the shell from the body while leaving the piece of the shell connected to the tail. Lastly, cut the shrimp open from the back or belly, but not so deep that it goes to the other side, and remove the entrails.

Keep in mind that a temperature between 30 and 140 degrees is where bacteria grows the quickest. If you do consume undercooked shrimp, you do have the risk of getting cholera.

There is a little trick to help you tell whether shrimp is properly cooked or not. Look closely at the crevice in the back of the shrimp, when the flesh here turns from translucent to opaque, the shrimp is done! Enjoy – it’s cooked through!

Can You Eat Shrimp and Raw Shrimp Amaebi Recipe

Amaebi raw shrimp is one of the popular dishes among sushi lovers. Amaebi is often served raw as sashimi, sushi, or nigiri.
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • Amaebi raw shrimp
  • wasabi
  • pickled ginger
  • soy sauce

Instructions

  • Defrost your shrimp beforehand if they’re frozen.
  • Grab the body with one hand and pinch the head between the thumb and index finger of the other hand.
  • Twist the body of the shrimp to remove the head. Then gently remove the shell around the body, leaving the last piece of the shell connected to the tail. The tail is usually left as the beautiful decoration.
  • Rinse the shrimp thoroughly. Cut open the body from the back, but don’t cut it through to the other side. Remove the entrails.
  • Prepare a bowl of hot water and iced water.
  • Dip the prepared amaebi raw shrimp into the hot water for a few seconds.
  • Then place the shrimp into the iced water immediately.
  • Pat them dry with paper towels.
  • Arrange them on a plate.
