Figs are delicious fruit that can be enjoyed fresh or dried. They’re low in calories and a good source of nutrients, making them a great addition to a healthy diet. But if you’re following a vegan lifestyle, is it okay to eat figs? Are Figs Vegan?

Because figs are a fruit, it’s easy to assume that they’re vegan. However, there’s more to consider than that.  Figs are pollinated by wasps that are then absorbed into the fruit. As a result, some debate that technically, an animal was used in the making of the fig.

Are Figs Vegan?

If you’re following a vegan diet, or researching the guidelines, you know that animal products cannot be consumed. This includes obvious items such as poultry, eggs, red meat, fish, and all types of dairy. In addition, vegans cannot eat any foods that are sourced from animals or animal products.

When considering figs, some people believe they are not vegan because they are pollinated by wasps, while others argue that they are plant-based through and through.

Why Do Some Consider Figs Non-Vegan?

This part can get a bit complicated but the general belief is because a female wasp crawls into a tiny opening within the fig flower, lays her eggs, eventually dies there, and is absorbed within the fig, the fig cannot be considered vegan. 

Why Do Some People Think Figs Are Vegan?

In addition to the belief that one should not consume meat, vegans also believe that animals should not be exploited or treated cruelly.  Some vegans also believe that because pollination is a necessary and natural process, figs are indeed vegan. And according to their website, the folks at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) would agree.

Do All Figs Have Dead Wasps in Them?

When you eat a fig, you would never know about the wasp because it is completely digested by the enzymes inside the fruit. And contrary to rumors, the slight crunchy texture of fig comes from its seeds, not from a wasp.

So, Should Vegans Eat Figs?

The answer is entirely up to you. Figs are delicious, nutritious, and are believed to help control blood sugar levels, and aid in the reduction of the risk of heart disease. In addition, there are some commercial varieties of fig that don’t require wasp pollination. The bottom line is, you should do your research to determine what’s best for you.

Are Figs Vegan (+Vegan Figs Salad Recipe)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound figs

Optional Additions

  • Lettuce
  • Grapes
  • Walnuts
  • Vegan cheese
  • Your favorite dressing

Instructions

  • Rinse the figs.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut each one in half lengthwise down the middle. Then cut each half into halves.
  • In a large bowl, mix figs with the rest of the ingredients. Serve and enjoy!
