Hop across the pond for a taste of one of the UK’s yummiest treats. Traditional British Flap Jacks are delicious bars of oats and golden syrup, baked until they’re lightly brown. It’s similar to granola bars and are made with simple, wholesome ingredients you probably already have on hand.
Servings 12 bars

Ingredients

  • 4 cups quick oats
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup demerara sugar or turbinado sugar or raw sugar
  • 1/2 cup golden syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F, placing the oven rack in the middle position. Line a baking sheet with parchment.
  • Place the oats in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  • Place a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the butter, sugar, golden syrup and salt (if butter is unsalted). Once the butter is melted and sugar partially dissolved, pour over the oats. Stir with a wooden spoon until coated completely.
  • Turn the oat mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Shape into a rectangle of about ¾-inch thickness. Pack down with a pie server or rigid spatula.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown for soft flapjacks. For crispier flapjacks, bake for 40 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet.
  • Using a pastry scraper or sharp knife, cut into squares. Transfer the squares to a wire rack to cool completely prior to serving.
