Every year right before Thanksgiving and Christmas, I always head over to Pinterest and pin a ton of holiday recipes that look delicious and look simple enough for me to make myself (Julia Child, I am NOT). The thing is though, I almost always make the same exact thing year after year. Obviously, my family likes them because they ask for them every year but sometimes it’s a little boring and I want to try new recipes and new flavors.
There’s one dish that I always have all to myself that I decided I want to experiment with this year. That, my friends, is the cranberries. No one else in my family likes cranberries and I am completely OK with that. That just means more for me! So, why not go completely different this year and bring some new flavors to one of my favorite holiday foods?
It’s always fun to take what is normally a very traditional dish, like cranberries, and add in some new flavors that maybe you never would have thought of before. This year, I decided I wanted to try something with Latin flavors and came up with Chipotle Cranberry Orange Sauce. Chipotle peppers not only taste great but can be used in so many different recipes. You can use the chiles for an intense, smoky flavor or just the sauce for more of a sour, sweet flavor and less fiery smoky heat. My go-to chipotle peppers are from La Morena. Not only do they taste delicious, but it’s easy to have them as a pantry staple and to be able to whip up a great meal as the hectic holiday season approaches.
I bought our La Morena chipotle peppers (as well as a can of jalapeños, another pantry staple in our house) at our local Superior grocery store. When you head into your local Vallarta, Los Altos, Northgate, El Super, Cardenas, or Superior retailers, you’ll find specially marked displays in your stores for extra savings when you buy your favorite La Morena products Coca-Cola products. I chose Fanta because I knew that would pair with the cranberries the best!
What I love most about this dish is it’s NOT just a Thanksgiving side dish. You can pair it with meatloaf, a roast, chicken, or if you’re like me, you can eat it all by itself because it’s THAT good!
Chipotle Cranberry Orange Sauce
1 cup fresh cranberries, rinsed
1 tbsp La Morena Chipotle Chili and Adobo Sauce, chopped
1-7.5 fl oz can Orange Fanta
1/4 cup water
Add all ingredients into a medium saucepan and heat to boiling.
Cook 10 to 15 minutes, until cranberries have popped and sauce has thickened.
Remove from heat and allow to cool until warm to touch. Serve and enjoy!
*This sauce has a good, spicy kick. Seeds can be removed from the Chipotle Chili for a milder sauce
