This past weekend, I had the opportunity to go to the Chris Tomlin concert at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA. Huge thanks to Transparent Productions and Pollinate Media Group for the opportunity!
If you don’t know who Chris Tomlin is, he’s a contemporary Christian music singer. I’ve known and sang his songs at church before without knowing they were his songs. Chris is currently on his Burning Lights Tour with Kari Jobe, a fantastic Dove Award-winning singer & Louie Giglio, a great speaker & pastor of Passion City Church, Atlanta , GA.
When I found out I was going to be able to go to the concert, I knew right away that I wanted to take my Mom with me. My mom really loves Chris Tomlin’s music and I knew we would have a great time. Then, I found out that my friend Barbara from Chase The Star was going as well and I knew it was going to make for one incredible night!
Arriving at the venue, I had no idea what to expect. Let me be honest here…I’ve only been to one concert in my life. It was New Kids On The Block, December 1989. Now, I am still an NKOTB fan but that is a long stretch without going to another concert! I was nervous and had no idea what to expect. Coming into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, we saw lots of food trucks and little stands serving all sorts of food. I didn’t even think to see what kind of food they had there before we went but I would get there early & eat some of that yummy food if I ever went again!
We headed to our seats & were just blown away at how awesome the seats were. We were perfectly center and just far enough away to see the whole stage but close enough to really see and appreciate everything. No too long after we sat down, Kari Jobe came out and opened the show. I hadn’t heard of Kari before so I had no clue what to expect but she is such an amazing singer & loved all the songs she sang. I’m always jealous of people that can just sing and can sing well, and Kari can definitely do that!
After Kari performed a few songs, it was time for Chris Tomlin to come out. He was introduced by DJ Promote, who was so fun, energetic and had the crowd dancing. From the moment Chris Tomlin came out & started singing, it was fun and uplifting the entire time. The lighting of the stage was beautiful and I love that there were a huge screen behind the band that showed the words most of the time & then also, two screens on the side of the stage. It was amazing to be able to sing along with the songs and hear everyone else around me singing as well.
Kari Jobe came back out and sang a few more songs with Chris and the band. She really is a beautiful singer & I can’t wait to go buy her CD and sing along (badly!) with her. The last song they sing, and all dance to, is “God’s Great Dance Floor”, from Chris’ Burning Lights CD. Shortly after the song starts, almost out of no where, these big giant balls appear & are thrown around the audience, like a beach ball at a baseball game. The difference here is that these balls are HUGE! Believe me, they are incredibly fun but I kept ducking or launching them elsewhere as I tried to get pictures of the stage. One giant ball came flying at my face, smacking me and my camera and that’s when I knew it was time to put the camera away and enjoy the last bit of the song!
It truly was a very special night & I am so glad we were able to go. Being a part of the sold out crowd was awesome and I loved turning around to see all the people take out their cell phones when asked and become “Burning Lights”.
One other thing made this night truly special for me. On the way to the concert, I found out that my Aunt (who is also my Godmother) and my Cousin were going to be there as well. I haven’t seen my aunt in about 16 years and it meant the absolute world to me to see her that night. I will blame exhaustion for forgetting to take a picture with her but I am so so blessed & thankful that I was able to see her after all these years! Love you Aunt Mendy!
